Brief Description & Full Job Description: The Utility Arborist role includes rigging or moving tree branches and woody vegetation that are in proximity or could contact any electrical apparatus. A Utility Arborist uses climbing techniques, climbing systems, and mechanized equipment to work at heights in urban, rural, and off-road locations.

The role requires the Utility Arborist to:

  • Remove dangerous trees using industry-approved techniques

  • Conducts condition assessments within the electrical system rights-of-way to determine the work to be completed

  • Secures authorization to perform work, including from the general public, utility customers, government agencies, First Nations communities, and landowner associations

  • Uses different types of on- and off-road aerial devices to work at heights in urban, rural, and off-road locations

  • Operates on- and off-road equipment such as snow machines, all-terrain vehicles, and large tracked aerial devices for work that is away from main highways

Qualifications:

  • 2 years of line-clearing experience is required.

  • Previous experience and knowledge with pruning around hydro utility.

  • Driver’s license; CLEAN ABSTRACT - DZ/AZ, minimum G

  • Previous experience in managing a crew

  • ISA certification in good standing is also an asset.

  • Competent in technical report-writing, tree identification & assessment

  • Practical knowledge of tree biology, tree biomechanics, and arboricultural practices

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Must be in current and good standing (or working towards) with the following certifications: Working at heights, fall arrest, WHMIS, Book 7, Chainsaw certification

  • Exhibits a true passion for arboriculture

  • Ability to identify plants, diagnose problems, and recommend management solutions based on good arboricultural practices and current industry standards

  • Excellent communication skills—verbal, nonverbal, active listening, and observational

  • Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills – staying professional and composed, managing emotions, focusing on goals and desired outcomes, communicating effectively for desired results

  • Strong sense of teamwork based on respect for production staff, management, and customers

  • Good time management skills, organization, follow-through, and tenacity

  • Able to work increased hours as needed in high season and as required for emergency responses

  • Able to perform job functions in all types of weather and conditions

  • Desire and ability to invest time in developing knowledge and performance through continued education and training.
